What makes truly premium fly tying materials, well, premium?
Think about it. For manufactured synthetic materials or genetically engineered chickens grown for hackle, quality is largely a matter of good design, planning, and process control. However, most natural materials weren't produced specifically for fly tying. So how can you be assured that the fly materials you stock are the very finest?
The first step is the selection of the very best natural fly materials. Not all elk hair is suitable for fly tying, let alone the wing of a size 18 Comparadun. Not all CDC (or partridge or peacock or...) is suitable for tying flies. As you know, there is a great variation in material qualities. Sheen, texture, hue, color saturation, intact tips, uniform size...the list could go on an on, and all are critical to the tier. It takes an experienced hand and eye to judge the true quality of natural materials for fly tying. As former commercial tiers for more than 30 years, we have personally tied more than 100,000 dozen exhibit-quality flies for fly shops throughout the West. We know how to select the very finest from the simply good.
The second step is processing the materials. Careless or inexperienced handling can marginalize the usefulness and salability of otherwise fine materials. This is particularly the case when tanning, bleaching, and dying. Our tanner is a specialist when it comes to handling our hair products, insuring that the hair retains its strength, sheen, and natural tips. All bleaching and most dying are done in-house at Nature's Spirit, where we have more than a decade of experience in achieving subtle shades in natural materials that are consistent across dye lots and across our range of products.
Finally, the materials must be attractively packaged and delivered with care. We work tirelessly to insure that you get the products you need, when you need them. We take pride in our quality, and we want you to share that pride when you stock and recommend our products.
All of this may sound like a tall order for a family-run business operating from a 1025 square foot straw-bale shop located at the base Montana's Mission Mountains. However, our "intimate" size guarantees that we have an intimate relationship with our products--we personally handle every single piece of material that we sell.
Thank you for choosing Nature's Spirit.
We personally guarantee your satisfaction.
